a. What do you think is the main message Jaques is trying to get across in his talk? Chinese culture is shaped by ancestral worship, social relationship, and the civilization state, rather than a nation state. You can't run Chine like a nation state, you have to run it like a civilization with many systems. China is huge and has 1.3 billion people. Also China is diverse and decentralized. Unity is main political value. The relationship between the state and the society is very strict and is more than any other westernized state. The state in China is the embodiment of the Chinese civilization state and it is as close as China gets to a spiritual role. The arrival of countries like China and India represents the single most act of democratization and will have a voice because everyone will be forced to listen to the majority (China).
He mainly talked about the different characteristics of China and how in the future that differences from the western civilazation are going to give the country a huge power and role in the world. That China is the future, and that european countries are losing power in decision making roles. So we should stop being so ignorant and try to understand more of the chinese culture.
b. What will be some of the consequences of China becoming the major economic world power? It is a huge developing country that has been growing by 10% per year over the past 30 years. It will face obstacles because of such growth and more retailers will want to move in to address the needs of a bigger population. We refuse to address the difference that China is to the west, which is ignorant because China is becoming the more dominant power and can eventually take over weaker parts of the world possibly. the world is being driven and shaken by the developing world. The West is rapidly losing its influence in the world. The world will be increasingly unfamiliar to us because we have never been forced to adapt and be open minded to the changing world.
It will have it's advantages and disadvantages. First, China is far more developed in terms of technology and effcient use of resources. But as it grows we will be more unfamiliar to what is happening because of the lack of knowledge about chinese culture, and because the world will face a huge change and will have to adapt, which will not be easy, since western cultures always seem to think they have the reason because of the power it once had and still has for the moment, so it'll be difficult to change people's mind and beliefs.
c. Did anything Jaques said about China surprise you? Give examples. China is not like the west, so we can't think of it as such. Over 90% Chinese people feel like they are related to one ancestor, which is Han. In reality they are diverse and are related to more races than they think. The State and society work together and respect one another because the Chinese has a different view of the state and see them as "the head of the family". The Chinese may have even invented golf, which is inferred in the last picture showed on the video.
It surprised me that their culture is far more different than western in many more levels that I thought, not just in way of living or food, but that everyone believe that they have one acestor in common, Han. Also, that they were much more developed in the past than europeans, because of the boat they showed at the end that was significantly bigger than Columbus, and that they might invented golf.
d. Do you believe his overall comments/predictions? Yes I believe he is right on cue with everything he is saying and is very well educated on the subject of China and making projections. He made it very easy to follow him and it gave me great insight.
Yes maybe, he has a lot of knowledge about chinese culture, and he did state very strong arguments.
